Smudging as a ritual must be performed by an initiated elder and therefore anyone outside of their spiritual tradition is simply doing a ritual cleansing by smoke. Many cultures throughout time have cleansed with smoke but smoke may not be conducive or allowed in every space. Therefore, many smokeless cleansing varieties have been created in spray form.
